Hearing Carry-Over

Hearing Carry-Over

HCO allows a person with a speech disability who has hearing capability make a call by typing to the Relay Operator who reads the message to the other party. The HCO user can hear the other party’s spoken responses through the phone.

Instructions

  1. Dial the HCO number at 1-800-659-3656.
  2. An OPR will answer "CR XXXX (M) NUMBER CALLING PLEASE?" GA. Each Relay OPR has a unique identification number instead of a name and this number is rotated on a scheduled basis. (F) or (M) is the gender of the Relay OPR and GA stands for "Go Ahead" which means it's your turn to speak/type.
  3. Type the area code and telephone number of the party you wish to call, then type "HCO PLEASE GA."
  4. After connection, the Relay OPR will not repeat what the other person has voiced directly to you; rather the Relay OPR will voice only what you have typed to the other person. After you type "GA," you will need to pick up the handset to listen to the spoken reply (as well as returning the handset back to the TTY before typing again). You both will need to say "GA" at the end of your responses.

Hearing Carry-Over to Hearing Carry-Over

HCO to HCO. Both HCO users can communicate with each other through relay. The Relay Operator reads the typed message from the HCO user and voices to the other HCO user, who listens and then types a response back in the same manner.

Hearing Carry-Over to Voice Carry-Over

HCO to VCO allows a VCO user to speak directly to a person who can hear but may have a speech disability. The VCO users voice will be heard by the HCO user and the typed response will be read by the VCO user.
