Standard TTY Relay Service is for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech loss and wish to communicate with a hearing person who uses a standard telephone.

Standard TTY relay calls are generally made using a text telephone, also known as a TTY, which is a communications device equipped with a keyboard for typing messages and a screen for reading messages. A TTY device connects to a standard phone line. TTY callers dial Relay Colorado to reach a Communications Assistant (CA) who processes their call.

Once connected, the TTY user types messages to the CA, who relays the conversation by reading it aloud to the hearing person. The CA then listens to the hearing person’s reply and types it to the TTY user.

Hearing people, or standard telephone users, can learn how to call a hearing or speech disabled person who uses a TTY.

Instructions

1.  Dial the TTY number at 1-800-659-2656 or 711.

2.  Colorado Communications Assistant will answer "RC XXXX (F) NUMBER CALLING PLEASE?" GA.

3.  Each Communications Assistant has his/her own identification number which is rotated on a scheduled basis. (F) or (M) is the gender of the OPR.

4.  “GA” stands for "GO AHEAD" which means it's your turn to type.

5.  Type the area code and telephone number of the party you want to call.

6.  The Communications Assistant will dial the number and relay the conversation to and from your TTY. Type "GA" at the end of each response.
