Voice Carry Over (VCO)

With VCO a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person can use their own voice to communicate

Voice Carry Over or VCO is a type of relay call that allows a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person to use their own voice to speak directly to the other caller. No typing on the TTY is required.

This service is especially useful for people who have lost some or all of their hearing but are still able to speak.

Instructions

  1. Dial 711 or 1-877-659-8260  to reach a Relay Colorado Communications Assistant.

  2. When the message "RC CA# XXXX NBR  CALLING PLS GA" appears on your TTY display screen, type the area code and telephone number you are calling followed by "VCO GA." If you prefer to give the CA the number verbally, type "VCO GA" and wait for the CA to come on the line.

  3. You will connect to a CA. If you have typed in the number, the CA will type "VCO ON,” then proceed with connecting your call.  If you have not typed in the number, the CA will type "VCO ON GA" to signal you to provide the number verbally.

  4. The CA will then dial and announce your call in the same way described under Standard TTY Relay Calls.

  5. Once the CA finishes relaying the hearing person’s message to you and types "GA," pick up your handset and speak directly into the receiver. The person you have called will hear you.

  6. Please say "GA" or "Go Ahead" when you are ready for a response.

  7. Continue this process throughout the duration of your call. When you are ready to hang up, say "bye sksk" then hang up.
